Don’t leave Cambodia without experiencing a traditional Khmer massage. Our selection of the best spas in Siem Reap will guarantee an evening of unmatched respite, delivering tranquility and relaxation after the sun sets on your temple explorations. But first, let’s explore what a Khmer massage is and how it’s different from a Thai massage.

What is a Traditional Khmer Massage?

A traditional Khmer massage often combines gentle stretching, pressure point stimulation, and rhythmic movements. Therapists may use their hands, elbows, forearms, and occasionally feet to perform the massage, focusing on energy pathways and specific muscle groups. The massage aims to restore balance and energy flow within the body, offering both physical and mental relaxation. Traditionally, natural oils or balms might also be used to enhance the therapeutic effects of the massage.

The Benefits of a Khmer Massage

Bye-bye Stress & Jetlags: Traveling to a foreign country can be overwhelming, but a traditional Khmer massage is like a magic stress-eraser. It’ll melt away your worries and leave you feeling calm and refreshed, ready to start exploring Siem Reap’s ancient wonders.

Boost Your Energy: Good circulation is key to feeling energetic and alive. A Khmer massage will kickstart your circulation, giving you that extra oomph to tackle the day head-on.

Aches & Pains Be Gone: After a day of exploring temples or other thrilling adventures in Cambodia’s hot and humid climate, your muscles deserve a good massage. Skilled hands will work out all the tension, leaving you feeling flexible and blissfully relaxed.

Affordable Bliss: Here’s the best part – Getting a massage in Cambodia won’t break the bank! You’ll enjoy double the pampering time and luxury for half the price compared to your hometown. It’s guilt-free indulgence for both you and your wallet.

Khmer Massage vs Thai Massage

Traditional Khmer massage and Thai massage share similarities in their focus on relaxation and therapeutic benefits. However, they differ in techniques and approaches. As mentioned above, Khmer massage incorporates gentle stretching, pressure points, and rhythmic movements, often targeting specific muscle groups. Thai massage involves stretching, compressions, and passive yoga-like positions. Both aim to improve well-being, but Khmer massage emphasizes targeted pressure and stretching, while Thai massage focuses on guided stretches and movements to release tension and enhance flexibility.

Choosing The Right Spa

If budget permits, we strongly advise steering clear of the numerous low-cost massage venues lining Pub Street and Old Market area. They are easily identifiable by masseuses stationed outside, brandishing menus and calling out to passersby with offers of $5 or $6 massages. These establishments might seem tempting at first glance. However, beyond the allure, it’s important to realize that these spots not only lack expertise, hygiene standards, and use low-quality massage oils that might cause skin irritation but also tend to underpay their staff. Unless you’re seeking a swift 30-minute foot massage before venturing into Pub Street, disappointment is likely.

Let’s discover why the Fair Trade Village is special and why it’s the perfect place for travelers seeking authentic Cambodian handicrafts.

One challenge for tourists in Siem Reap is telling the difference between Cambodian handmade products and imported goods. All products sold at the Fair Trade Village are certified by the Angkor Handicraft Association, which guarantees their authenticity.

This unique marketplace is divided into fourteen different sections, each dedicated to specific crafts. Whether you’re looking for beautifully carved wooden items, intricately crafted pottery, high-quality bronze and brass statues, natural fiber carpets, or exquisite silk products, the Fair Trade Village offers a diverse selection to suit every taste. Visitors can immerse themselves in the experience, observing artisans in action as they demonstrate their techniques and share the stories behind their creations.

Beyond its remarkable selection of handicrafts, the Fair Trade Village also contributes to community development. By supporting local artisans and providing them with fair wages and working conditions, the Fair Trade Village contributes to sustainable economic growth and the preservation of traditional craftsmanship. Shopping at the Fair Trade Village not only allows visitors to acquire meaningful souvenirs, but it also helps empower the local community, fostering a sense of pride and cultural continuity.

As the heat of the day subsides, take a moment to witness the sun making its glowing descent below the horizon. A kaleidoscope of intense, ever-changing colour sweeps across the sky, marking the end of another day in Siem Reap. During your stay, choose from our ten incredible sunset viewpoints. Our list caters for adventurers and zen-seekers alike, from mountainside vistas to city bars, hot air balloons and cruises. Sunset times vary only a little, ranging from 5.30pm to 6.30pm depending on the time of year. Plan your sunset viewing time accordingly, and don’t forget your camera!

Several of our recommended sunset viewpoints require a valid Temple Pass. However, the Angkor sites are free to access after 5.30pm.

Phnom Krom

The rewarding view from this out-of-town (12km south west of Siem Reap) viewing spot is of surrounding countryside. Dramatic skies signal the sun’s final burst of colour and light over the Tonle Sap lake. Allow plenty of time to reach this 140 metre high mountain and climb the rugged path to the summit. Recover from negotiating the steep ascent with a still and serene moment, taking in the breathtaking panorama.

Pre Rup

This temple mountain’s name, translated as ‘turn the body’ led people to believe it may have once been a mortuary temple, used for funeral ceremonies. However, Pre Rup was King Rajendravarman II’s state temple. It was the second temple to be built at Angkor after the capital was relocated there, from Koh Ker, in the late 9th Century. A challenging climb to the top of the temple offers a sweeping view of the surrounding rice fields and jungle, making it the ideal spot to enjoy a sunset spectacle. Why not round up the day’s temple exploration with Pre Rup?

This 60-meter high temple mountain is a favorite site among sunset admirers. With its far-reaching countryside views, it’s a photographer’s dream, too. Visitor numbers are controlled at this popular countryside escape, and strictly capped at 300. We recommend entering the site and collecting your lanyard an hour before sunset, giving you time to mount the steep, narrow steps to the highest terrace. The sun makes its graceful and effortless descent over West Baray, casting a golden light over the towers of Angkor Wat.

The fabulously fun Pub Street area may seem an unlikely spot for catching a sunset, but the neon-lit hub of vibrant night life in the heart of Siem Reap is a lively place to start the evening. Order a refreshingly cold drink as the sun goes down at one of the many venues with upstairs terraces for the best views. Packed with cocktail bars, live music, local and international restaurants and bright lights, Pub Street continues to lure tourists and locals from sundown until the small hours.

Built during a period of prolific expansion during the Khmer Empire in the 11th Century, this artificial reservoir near Angkor Thom is a popular swimming and leisure spot. Shaded hammocks are available to rent along its shore, or hire a boat ($20 per boat, so take your friends and family along, too). Bring a picnic or visit the array of food vendors, and find a vantage point on the viewing platform on the east dike to view the serene setting of the sun over the water.

Angkor Thom (South Gate)

The ancient capital city of the Khmer Empire makes a perfect end to a day of temple touring. Having visited the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King, head to Angkor Thom’s south gate. It’s an ideal location for viewing the dazzling sky at sunset over the temple’s moat. Catch the colours reflected in the water, as well as reflections of the temple and its statues. It will be crowded here, but less so in the evenings, as many group tours begin their temple circuit with Angkor Thom first thing in the morning.
